LENA MACHADO
(1903 - 1974) Promo page - 1998 Na Hoku Hanohano Award Winner: Liner Notes Award - Harry B. Soria, Jr. Anthology Album of the Year This historical anthology accurately portrays the life of a true Hawaiian legend, Lena Machado. Known as "Hawaii's Song Bird", her lyric soprano voice delighted millions of people for almost half a century. Those incomparable vocals, her more than 60 lifetime compositions, and her innovative arrangements, remain as treasures for succeeding generations. LENA MACHADO "Hawaiian Song Bird" 1997

Excerpted from Hawaii Music Hall of Fame1995 Hall of Fame Honoree Lena Machado (1903-1974) Lena Machado was known as "Hawai`i's Songbird". She was a composer, entertainer and an acclaimed singer whose Hawaiian-style soprano-falsetto performances moved her to dominance in the 1930s and 1940s, often referred to as "the Golden Age" of Hawaiian music.

Her remarkable singing style was discovered by a radio broadcaster, who according to the story, heard Lena singing from the top of the mango tree at the Y.W.C.A on Richards Street, and offered her a singing audition. Despite early mic fright, she was an immediate sensation.

Over the next 50 years of her singing career, Lena became one of the best-known personalities in the Hawaiian music world. She was a soloist with the Royal Hawaiian Band for many years, and performed in all the major cities of the United States, Asia and the Pacific. She is much remembered for her singing of "Song of the Islands" and "Aloha 'Oe" at Aloha Tower on Steamer Days.

During WWII, Lena's radio show was beamed around the world to American troops, and she traveled to many military bases to entertain. In addition to recording on several major record labels, Lena was asked to head the Hawai`i Pavilion at the San Francisco World's Fair in 1939 and 1940, and was voted the most popular entertainer at the Fair.

Lena's singing trademark, carried on today by many well-known singers of Lena's songs, was a vocal leap done with a break in the voice. Many of her own compositions such as "E Ku`u Baby", "Holo Wa`apa", "Ei Nei," were tailor-made for her unique vocal style which included holding a note until the audience was sure she was out of breath, and then singing the last phrase without breathing.

Characteristic of her aloha spirit, Machado devoted time in her later years to teaching Hawaiian songs and hula. Her legacy is the "Haku Mele Award", a scholarship given to a Kamehameha Schools senior who excels in composition.

MANA-OHANA
Website promo
Promo - Though performing together for less than a year, David, Craig and Keoki play and sing together like they've been family forever. Craig (bass, keyboards and `ukulele) may be shy and unassuming, but his bass playing is hard and heavy. Keoki (guitars and vocals), like Craig, has been honing his musical chops since childhood, being heavily influenced by his father. Both musically and physically, he is a powerful force in this musical `ohana. David (lead vocals and `ukulele), who's mother sang in the musical group 'the Starlights', didn't catch the music bug until later, but coming from such a strong musical family, it didn't take long before he was writing his own material. From their first casual meeting at a backyard kanikapila, the guys knew they had a special chemistry and through their hard work and creativity, their dreams came true. They believe that their live show is their strong suit, evident at recent gigs where they've received standing ovations and countless "hana hou"'s, including a guest set with Baba B. Promo - Namahana is named after her maternal grandmother, but the name itself originates from distinguished roots; it was the name of Queen Ka'ahumanu's mother. Namahana does not take this honor lightly. Her heritage is important to her and even though much of her music is more contemporary than traditional, she feels a sense of obligation to promote the strength of Hawaiian women. And whether she is singing about her love for that special someone in songs like, "Baby, I", "You And Me" and "Lonely Lifetime", or telling them it's time to hit the highway in "No, I Don't Think So" and "I Don't Need You", her message says mutual respect and equality are essential. Most evident of her love for her home can be heard in the haunting melody of "E Hawai`i Akea" and the heartbreaking "Home For Christmas".

KING BENNIE NAWAHI
Vintage. The following excerpted from Brad's Page of Steel.

One of the few Hawaiian guitarists during the 1920's and 1930's who could be considered a legitimate contender to the title of "King of the Hawaiian Guitar" was Benjamin Keakahiawa Nawahi. "King" Bennie Nawahi was born on July 3, 1899 in Honolulu to a large family. He taught himself to play slack key guitar, and by the age of 15 was playing Hawaiian guitar in Honolulu parks for sailors and tourists.

In 1919 Bennie got a job playing steel guitar with his brother Joe's group, the Hawaiian Novelty Five, on the passenger liner Matsonia. The group worked between San Francisco and Honolulu, eventually touring North America on the Orpheum vaudeville circuit. Before long, Bennie left the group and became an established singer and ukulele virtuoso. He was crowned "King of the Ukulele" by impresario Sid Grauman of Grauman's Chinese Theater fame. His stunts included playing the song "Turkey in the Straw" on Hawaiian guitar with his feet.

By 1928 Bennie Nawahi had started his recording career, recording on many different labels, including Columbia, Victor, Q.R.S. and Grey Gull. He settled in Los Angeles in the early 1930s and formed a group called King Nawahi and the International Cowboys (which also featured a very young Roy Rogers). Nawahi was one of the few Hawaiian musicians to consistently black jazz or blues numbers, some with black groups such as the Georgia Jumpers. He was also unusual among Hawaiian steel guitarists of his day in that he used a single cone Triolian rather than the National tricone guitars preferred by others.

In 1935, tragedy struck Nawahi, as he suddenly lost his eyesight while returning home from a performance. Doctors were unable to explain why he became blind. After a short time, he returned to the stage, working with various Hawaiian groups in the Polynesian restaurants and clubs that were popular in Southern California. After World War II, he again joined his brother in the Nawahi trio, recorded a few additional tunes, and continued to perform in clubs.

In addition to his musical abilities, Nawahi was also famed as a long distance swimmer. In 1946 he swam from San Pedro to Catalina Island in just over 22 hours. He is still the only blind man to have completed this swim. Remaining musically active through the years, Bennie Nawahi suffered a stroke in the late 1970s that left his body partially paralyzed. He died in Long Beach, California after a long illness on January 29, 1985.
