• North Korea Events: 2003 - 2004 -- Famine, missile threat, nuclear escalation adds up to military buildup -- and show of force on part of USFK. At same time, Kim Dae-jung working to perfect his "sunshine policy" with openness towards the North. Hodge-podge of inter-related events with North Korea brinksmanship to gain an advantage. • North Korean Events: 2005 -- Kim Jong-il strings the world along to get more goodies. Roh Moo-hyun finds inventive ways to feed the North while the North rolls out a long-range missile Taepdong-2 capable of being an ICBM. The north continues to test components for a nuclear test.
  
  
• North Korean Events: 2006 -- Food keeps flowing north, while the North continues to perfect its nuclear program. KEDO is finally buried. Tensions heat up again on the NDL -- with fear of another shooting incident. America promises to take North refugees, but it is only talk. Symbolic rail line connects North and South. North needs food, but still pumps money into missiles and nukes.
  
  
• North Korean Events: 2007 -- Starting in 2006, the on-going "soap opera" of North Korean intrigue with counterfeiting and drugs; nuclear disarment; and the continuing ROK aid to the North. Actions of the US to play "hardball" with the North at the six-party talks, while the North refuses to negotiate.
  
  
• North Korean Events: 2008 -- The new year loomed with promises of famine as the DPRK once again reneged on its denuclearization promises. The shooting death of a SK tourist at Geumgan Mountain Resort abruptly closed the resort -- though Kaesong operations continued. The North's refusal to cooperate created tensions that could affect aid to the North.
  
  
• North Korean Events: 2009 -- The year starts with North Korea closing its borders to the South and calling for a Southern uprising. It ends with H1N1 Swine flu outbreak and turmoil over currency redenomination.
• North Korean Events: 2010 -- The year starts with North Korea being offered carrots by the US to return to the six-party talks.

• North Korea Counterfeiting: 2007-2008 -- Chronology of events starting in 2006. North Korean counterfeiting which the South sandbags, while the US exerts financial sanctions. North makes the lifting of financial sanctions a demand before it will discuss its nuclear program in the six-party talks.
  
  
• North Korea Missile Crisis: 2007-Present -- The 1998 missile test across Japanese Air Space was a wakeup call, and the 4 Jul 2006 multiple missile firing into the East Sea hardened the Japanese stance. However, the ROK claims their "brothers" would never target South Korea.
  
  
• North Korea Nuclear Test and Sanction: 2006-Present -- North Korean last resort card to treat the nuclear test as defensive ploy and demands to be recognized as a nuclear power. After first test in Oct 2006, the US expected a second test as the North sought to be considered a full-fledged nuclear power. After lifting of financial sanctions, North again makes demands. Energy package negotiated. North misses deadline for nuclear declaration in Dec 2007 but six-party talks continue -- with North still on US terrorist list.
